What Poor Quartz Installation Actually Looks Like, and How We Avoid It

After more than 25 years in the stone trade and over 100 installations across Wimbledon, Kamil has seen every common installation failure. Here is what separates a professional finish from one that fails within a few years, and exactly how we approach each of the three areas where standards most often slip.

Joins are where most installations are won or lost. Inexperienced installers rush seams or rely too heavily on caulk to fill gaps, leaving joints that are visible from across the kitchen and susceptible to water ingress over time.

Our approach is different at every stage. Mating edges are precisely planed so both surfaces sit perfectly flush before any adhesive is applied. We then clamp the slabs using professional suction devices to hold exact alignment while the joint is bonded with a high-quality, colour-matched two-part epoxy. Once cured, the join is dressed back level with the surrounding surface.

Critically, we also position every seam over a solid cabinet carcass frame rather than across an unsupported span. A join sitting over empty space is a structural weak point regardless of how well it is bonded. Positioning it over framing distributes load correctly and gives the adhesive the stable base it needs to hold for the lifetime of the worktop

Very few domestic kitchens in Wimbledon have perfectly square walls. Period properties in Wimbledon Village and Southfields in particular can have walls that are significantly out of true. Inexperienced installers respond to this in one of two ways: they force cabinetry around to compensate, or they cut standard square slabs and mask the discrepancy with a bead of silicone, leaving either an uneven overhang or a wedge-shaped gap against the wall.

The result is a consistent worktop depth across the full run, with a tight, clean line to the wall regardless of how far out of square the room actually is.

Slab quality control is the stage most installers skip, and the one that causes the most visible problems after installation. Mixing slab batches, even within the same colour, can result in obvious differences in pigment, thickness, or veining direction that are impossible to correct once the worktops are installed.

Before any slab reaches your home, we carry out our Axe 3-Point Stone Check:

Point 1: Batch Number Matching. We uncrate and verify batch numbers at the warehouse for every slab in your order. Slabs from different production runs are never mixed, even if they carry the same colour code.

Point 2: Visual Inspection Under Proper Lighting. Every slab is inspected under adequate lighting for dye uniformity, surface defects, edge damage, and any variation in the base tone. This is not something that can be reliably done from a sample chip or a digital image.

Point 3: Dry Lay and Grain Check. We lay the slabs out in sequence before fabrication begins to confirm that veining flows consistently across the full kitchen run. On Calacatta and other heavily veined surfaces in particular, this step determines whether the finished kitchen looks intentional and considered, or disjointed and accidental.
